We were gutted to see alsdeli.co.nz go, but something equally epic has taken it’s place — enter Chicka strutting hard with classic Korean fried chicken and beer. The devilish combo made a huge hit offshore and it’s exciting to see it popping up in various eateries in Auckland (KFC’s gotta up their game). If fried chicken is not your thing (first of all, who even ARE you?), there’s a good selection of alternatives including fried dumplings, salad bowls, bulgogi wraps and pork bao. Jeffrey had the spicy lamb ribs in a rich, cheesy fondue on a sizzling-hot plate, we recommend getting the rice balls to go with it, or the chicka chips. The eatery itself is a long narrow space, so don’t expect to bring a huge crowd in. However they’re on Uber Eats! Perfect if you need a good feed before (or during) the next Super Bowl sesh. The fried chicken is as you’d expect from any classic advertisement so imagine us saying it in a commercial-voice: super crunchy goodness on the outside and tender juiciness on the inside. No comment could be given on beer (we restrained ourselves, it was a work day)…and it looks like they have the hard stuff on the menu too. See you there Saturday?
Louise had the Original Chicken. She said "Given Chicka were only open a week, we need to give them points for accommodating a gillion people in a tight space on a hot day during their biggest lunch hour yet. Patchy delivery, missing meals and a massive lag in both service and clearing tables almost outweighed the epic crunch and tender juiciness of the chicken…but not quite. Not sure if they would appreciate me saying it was on par with KFC, but as a loyal KFC fan, this is high praise."

Katie had The Original Fried Chicken with a mix of drums and wings; sauces were the Thai Curry, Yangyeom and Spicy sauce. She said "Keen to see how they fare after a few weeks when the teething issues are (hopefully) over. The chicken is pretty decent, super crunchy skin with juicy meaty goodness inside. Would probably come again with friends who like to drink, because there’s no point otherwise *WINK*."

Bri had the Jap Chae fried Vermicelli. She said "Quite good, but next time I would share two dishes with someone else for variety."
Jeffrey had the Spice Lamb Ribs Cheesy Fondue. She said "Too saucy."
